25 Sep The 23nd Annual Golf Tournament
The 23rd Annual Golf Tournament
Monday, June 5 at Berry Hills Country Club
A beautiful day was had at the 23rd Annual Golf Tournament at the challenging Berry Hills Country Club course with golf chairman, L.J. Fairless. The double shotgun start of nearly 200 golfers along with a team of committed volunteers, led by Paula Vineyard and Cindy Farley, raised $100,000. The honorary chairman of this year’s event was Sam Femia.
In May 2015, Sam Femia’s daughter noticed a lump on his neck while playing in a local golf tournament. He immediately acted and made a doctor’s appointment, thinking it was only a cyst or swollen gland. What Sam thought was going to be something minor turned out to be devastating news that he had cancer on his tonsil and tongue. Sam, a longtime South Charleston resident, chose Thomas Memorial Hospital for his care. He has a close relationship with Thomas Health, he was born at Thomas Memorial and his wife has worked at Saint Francis for 38 years. The personalized care and compassion he has received from his physicians and caretakers at Thomas Health have made a terrible thing like cancer more bearable. After surgery and treatments, Sam’s health began to gradually improve. He was feeling great and thought cancer was a thing of the past until a follow-up scan showed the cancer had spread. Today, Sam continues to receive weekly chemotherapy at Thomas Health and is grateful that he is able to so at his community hospital, with the support of his family. We were honored for Sam to team up with the Foundation for Thomas Health as honorary chairman of the 23rd Annual Golf Tournament. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament went to the Thomas Memorial Hospital Cancer Center.
